Hauraki Rail Trail- Thames to Paeroa section. This starts at the Thames Wharf, and goes across the old rail corridor to Paeroa. This is a fairly flat, wide, gravel track, with occasional small bridges and animal stops as it passes farm tracks and roads. At Paeroa, the track continues straight down a section of road, and crosses into the river reserves, along the top of the stop banks. Turn left and go across the main vehicle bridge if you want to carry on to Te Aroha (right hand track) or through the Karangahake Gorge to Waikino and Waihi (Left trail across the road)

This track has been upgraded by the Thames MTB club from a rough hiking track to a dual use trail and is now rideable from the bottom. You can ride approximately 4.5 kms up to the stunning Red cliffs where amazing views can be had looking up into the top of the Kauaeranga valley. From the Red cliffs, the trail has not had any work done on it so is not ridable. When riding from the bottom, once you get past the 2nd bridge that runs over the Karaka stream, it gets very step with a few sections requiring pushing (unless on an e-bike).
