Description
Screeching Kākā is a flowing singletrack trail, that gives a fun downhill run after a short climb at the start. The trail begins with a gentle climb of around 14m over the first 140m, gaining a little elevation before the trail tips over and becomes a flowing descent through the pine forest. From there it drops 63m over the remaining trail, creating a gravity-biased ride with plenty of momentum. Shaped mostly by hand, the trail follows the natural contours of the hillside to create a smooth and natural-feeling line. Riders will find a mix of flowing bermed corners and sections with a slalom-style feel, weaving between the trees and encouraging a playful side-to-side flow. Along the way there are also several steeper roll-downs and drop-offs where the trail tips over the natural terrain, adding a bit of spice and keeping things interesting as you descend. The trail gets its name from the resident kākā that frequent the area. These native parrots are especially active around dawn and dusk and their loud screeching calls regularly echoed through the forest while the trail was being built — sometimes from the trees directly overhead.
