Why we built OpenTrails
Finding reliable trail information in New Zealand has always been fragmented. Status updates are scattered across council websites, Facebook groups, and word of mouth. Trail conditions change with the weather, and riders are often left guessing.
OpenTrails brings it all together into one free platform. We automatically sync trail status from official sources like regional councils and trail organisations, and combine that with community-submitted reports so you get the most accurate picture before you ride.
Whether you are a weekend warrior checking if your local trails are open, or planning a riding trip to a new region, OpenTrails gives you the information you need - free, with no account required to browse.
How trail data works
Trail status and conditions on OpenTrails come from two sources:
- Official sources -- We automatically sync status from regional councils, park authorities, and trail organisations. When a trail network publishes an update, it appears on OpenTrails.
- Community reports -- Riders with a free account can submit trail reports after a ride. These reports help fill the gaps between official updates and give riders on-the-ground conditions.
This combination of automated syncing and community input means trail information stays as current as possible. If you notice something out of date, you can help by submitting a report.
Our values
What OpenTrails stands for
Free for everyone
OpenTrails is free to use with no paywall. Trail status, maps, and the directory are open to every rider in New Zealand.
Community-driven
Trail data is maintained by riders and local trail associations. Community reports and official updates keep conditions accurate and current.
Open data
Status and conditions are synced from official sources including regional councils and trail organisations, combined with rider-submitted reports.
Built for New Zealand
Every feature is designed around the trails, geography, and riding culture of Aotearoa New Zealand.
For mountain bike clubs
OpenTrails is not just for individual riders. We also build tools for mountain bike clubs to manage their members, publish trail reports, accept donations, and gather feedback - all in one place.
If you run a club in New Zealand, learn more about club features or create a free account to get started.
