Mountain Bike Trails in Hokitika

Hokitika - Kaniere Tramway (Off-Road Cycle Trail Section)

This is the recently completed section of the WCWT that once again links Hokitika with Kaniere Township - new bridges and surfacing have brought this key community linkage to life again Originally built in 1866 by the Hokitika and Kanieri Tramway company, the tramway was constructed from the Hokitika wharf to Kanieri (old spelling); a horse drawn tram ran on timber planks laid on sleepers.

Hokitika Heritage Trail (Airport track section)

A section of the Hokitika Heritage Trail. Runs from the cemetery, across the southern end of the Airport runway. A great location to experience a plane landing over your head - especially at night.

Hokitika Heritage Trail (Cycle Trail/Floodwall Section)

This section of trail forms part of the Heritage Trail loop around Hokitika, and the WCWT.

Forms part of the route from town to Blue Spur Forest.

Kaniere Water Race - Cycle Trail Section

A stunning section of easy singletrack, along the historic Kaniere Water Race. This section, from The Landing (Lake Kaniere) to Ward Road, has been upgraded and incorporated into the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Continue along the 'Water Line' section to Hurunui Jacks for one of the best easy rides near Hokitika.

Kaniere Water Race - Grade 4 Section

This section of the original Kaniere Water Race track is still in its raw state, with narrow technical sections, and some climbing/descending; just the way we like it. And the stairs can be viewed as a chance to walk, or a technical trail feature.

Lake Kaniere Track - Northern End

Sweet technical forest singletrack along the western side of Lake Kaniere. Highlights include the track touching the lake edge, and stunning forest and lake views. The track is a mixture of intermediate and advanced riding. A good Grade 3 ride option is an in and out ride from Sunny Bight.

Lake Kaniere Track - Southern End

Sweet technical forest singletrack along the western side of Lake Kaniere. At its southern/eastern end the track rises part way up Mt Upright/Te Taumata o Uekanaku, making for a sweet technical descent in each direction. A lookout over the lake is offered part way up the lake side of the climb. Highlights include the track touching the lake edge, and stunning forest and lake views. The track is a mixture of intermediate and advanced riding with a short section of expert, grade 5 track near the southern end.

Mahinapua Track

Following an old logging tramline, the track reveals many relics of the 1885 sawmill's activities. Also part of the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

Racecourse Track (Hokitika Heritage Trail)

A fun section of single-track through native forest, and skirting around the end of the racecourse. Part of the Hokitika Heritage Trail.

Skyla

Fun little descending track in town. Or alternatively a short singletrack climb instead of the Airport Drive road section - (watch out for riders if you ride up it).

Wadeson Island Track

A fun little section of track within an area of wetland restoration.

Water Line Track (Hurunui Jacks) - Cycle Trail Section

A stunning section of easy riding; in conjunction with the Grade 2 section of the Kaniere Water Race, this is one of the best easy rides near Hokitika.

Water Race / Water Line Link

Cycle Trail (West Coast Wilderness Trail) section of Ward Road. This links the Grade 2 section of the Kaniere Water Race, with the Water Line piece of trail.

Wilderness Trail - Highway (Off-Road Section)

Off-road section of trail, beside the Highway.

Wilderness Trail - Kaniere Spiral Section

Off road section which includes some stunning forest.

Wilderness Trail - Mahinapua Creek Section

Another stunning section of newly constructed easy riding, linking the historic Mahinapua Rail Bridge with the Mahinapua Track. In conjunction with the Mahinapua Track, this is one of the best easy rides near Hokitika.

Wilderness Trail - short link section

Short gravel link track from the Golf Course (end of Golf Links Road) to the Information Kiosk on the side of the Highway.
