Hokitika - Kaniere Tramway (Off-Road Cycle Trail Section)

This is the recently completed section of the WCWT that once again links Hokitika with Kaniere Township - new bridges and surfacing have brought this key community linkage to life again Originally built in 1866 by the Hokitika and Kanieri Tramway company, the tramway was constructed from the Hokitika wharf to Kanieri (old spelling); a horse drawn tram ran on timber planks laid on sleepers.

Kaniere Water Race - Cycle Trail Section

A stunning section of easy singletrack, along the historic Kaniere Water Race. This section, from The Landing (Lake Kaniere) to Ward Road, has been upgraded and incorporated into the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Continue along the 'Water Line' section to Hurunui Jacks for one of the best easy rides near Hokitika.

This section of the original Kaniere Water Race track is still in its raw state, with narrow technical sections, and some climbing/descending; just the way we like it. And the stairs can be viewed as a chance to walk, or a technical trail feature.

Sweet technical forest singletrack along the western side of Lake Kaniere. Highlights include the track touching the lake edge, and stunning forest and lake views. The track is a mixture of intermediate and advanced riding. A good Grade 3 ride option is an in and out ride from Sunny Bight.

Lake Kaniere Track - Southern End

Sweet technical forest singletrack along the western side of Lake Kaniere. At its southern/eastern end the track rises part way up Mt Upright/Te Taumata o Uekanaku, making for a sweet technical descent in each direction. A lookout over the lake is offered part way up the lake side of the climb. Highlights include the track touching the lake edge, and stunning forest and lake views. The track is a mixture of intermediate and advanced riding with a short section of expert, grade 5 track near the southern end.
