This is an old forestry trail. Follow the track up through regenerating pine forest to a clearing with a sharp left turn an start of a steep climb. Continue up this track, passed the plateau and up into slightly overgrown track. The track will then turn into regrowing grass covered trail with a gentle roll down to another short climb. Continue following the main track now starting to descend back into the pine forest. About 200mtrs down this trail there is a just visible track to your right leading into thicker bush. Follow this track through the overgrowing track. Several hundred metres into this track take the first sharp left turn. This takes you down a moderately rutted overgrown and slightly challenging descent. Continue following this track. It will eventually open out to an old forestry road with an amazing view of the Waiohine Gorge and the Tararua Ranges. Follow the road down to the main Waiohine Gorge Road turn left at the main road and ride back to the DOC shelter.
