Best Mountain Bike Trails in Matukituki Valley
The Matukituki Valley near Wanaka features the West Branch trail, a rough 4WD track following a scenic glacial valley toward Mt Aspiring National Park between towering mountain walls. The valley ride is approximately 10km to the Aspiring Hut with breathtaking alpine views, accessible via a 60km gravel road from Wanaka through remote backcountry.

The 4WD access road up the West Branch of the Matukituki Valley. This route traverses private land (Mt Aspiring Station) via an access easement. ###### LEAVE ALL GATES AS YOU FIND THEM #####. Please stay on the road. When you get to just past Cascade Hut there is a locked gate and fence. This is where the National Park starts. You can ride along the rough 4WD track to the hut, but all tracks from there on are walking only. Take a small pack and sleeping bag and stay at Mt Aspiring Hut and do a Bike then Hike. Hut passes can be booked online at www.doc.govt.nz or at the Wanaka DOC Head Quarters.
