Description

Te Hangāruru is a flowing Grade 2 trail forming a key section of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono Great Ride. Starting at Horopito, the trail winds through regenerating native forest, historic bush tramway corridors, wetlands and boardwalks, with suspension bridges, waterfalls and views toward Mt Ruapehu. The name Te Hangāruru speaks to a place of abundance, reflecting the rich natural and cultural history of the Waimarino forests and the rohe of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua. This section is suitable for riders of moderate ability and is shared with walkers. Ride it as an out-and-back or as part of a wider Mountains to Sea journey.
