Description

Starting at Opunake Lake, which wasonce a vegetable garden that suppliedearly settlers, Opunake Walkway headspast the Orimupiko Cemetery andthe Armed Constabulary Cemetery. The Waiaua River Mouth offersextraordinary views of Taranaki’sdynamic coastline, Opunake Beachhas great surf and you can view the Taranaki Bight from the Lion’s Lookout. Middleton Bay is a picturesquebeach too, but not safe for swimming. History buffs will enjoy the Old Cottage Hospital which was the birthplaceof many famous New Zealandersincluding runner Peter Snell. A battletook place at Te Namu Pa where Wiremu Kingi Matakatea repelled 800Waikato Māori successfully for an entiremonth, armed only with a single rifle.
