The Ohakune Old Coach Road is the original link between the North Island main trunk railway from the north and the South. The trail follows the old bridle route with some slight deviations added through stunning native bush. The trail climbs steadily but is absolutely ideal for all levels of cyclists and families if enough time is taken. It heads uphill from Ohakune to Horopito - rising 135 meters over the 9 kilometers. The highlight of the trail is the 284 meter wide - 45 meter high Hāpuawhenua Viaduct which ceased it's rail duties on the North Island main trunk rail line in 1987. It is a spectacular piece of New Zealand's railway engineering history. Along the trail Department of Conservation signs display a history and photos of the main trunk line's construction.

An alternate return trail for Te Ara Mangawhero (Phase 1) This section is on the Western side of the Ohakune Mountain Road and Mangawhero River. Towards the bottom it joins a short sealed section of access road as it passes the Mangawhero DOC campsites before crossing the Mountain Road to rejoin the main Te Ara Mangawhero trail. If walking it can form part of a larger loop by linking to the Mangawhero Forest Trail just before the campground road bridge instead of crossing back over the Mountain Road (no bikes on the Mangawhero Forest Trail)

An all weather trail with good surfacing and sight lines that takes one up through native bush. At the moment it just finishes in the bush and you have to return, a fun alternative is to return via the campground.

Te Hangāruru is the newest addition to the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono Great Ride, offering an easy-going adventure through a landscape shaped by time, culture, and connection. Linking with the Ohakune Old Coach Road in the south and eventually connecting through the Last Spike to the Marton Sash and Door tramway and Waimarino in the north, this is the first part of a long-awaited missing link. The mostly flat Grade 2 trail winds through peaceful native forest, across flowing boardwalks, and over a dramatic suspension bridge above the Mangaturuturu River.
