Description

Description The Western Okataina Walkway is an old forestry road that dates back to earlier last century when the area was logged for rimu, totara, rata and kahikatea. It is generally wide and well formed. Pass through some stunning native bush. Absorb amazing views of Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti from the Whakapounakau Trig. Getting there The track has three entry points - the Okataina Education Camp and Waipungapunga carpark (both on Okataina Road) and off Millar Road, Lake Okareka. Mountain biking The Western Okataina Walkway is a challenging mountain bike ride. It can be ridden in both directions but if you start from Millar Road, you'll experience an exhilarating downhill from Whakapoungakau Trig all the way to the Outdoor Education Centre. Know before you go There is comprehensive signage at all entry points explaining trail conditions as well as maps showing each particular area.
