It passes throughclassic central North Island beech forest, across streams and rivers andover two impressive gorges as it tracks along the upper section of the Tongariro River.A grade 4 trail, it is most suited to experienced riders and those intermediateriders seeking a challenge. 7km long,the trail can be ridden as a point to point ride with pre-arranged shuttles providing transport;or as a 14km round trip if you’re using your own transport.Getting There:The trail is just an hour’sdrive south of Taupo and 15 minutes south of Turangi. It iseasily accessed viaKaimanawa Road, just off State Highway 1. Car parking is available at the northern end of thetrail,at The Pillars of Hercules; or at the southern end,off Tree Trunk Gorge Road.Alternatively there areshuttle services available from either Taupo or Turangi. Starting from the northern end,the trail begins with a challenging climb for a kilometerbefore evening out to reveal beautifulriver fords and wooden bridges as you ride up the river.
