Description
Lake Dunstan Trail was built and is maintained by Southern Lakes Trails Trust.It is a purpose-built cycling and walking trail with a total length of 55km. There are 3 sections. Smith’s Way to Old Cromwell. Old Cromwell to Bannockburn Bridge. Bannockburn Bridge to Clyde Dam. The Old Cromwell to Clyde sections are the most popular parts of the trail with a length of approx. 41 km. It has quickly become one of the most popular trails in the country and traverses some of Central Otago’s most dramatic landscapes & scenery.The trail has vertical ascent of 580m. and takes about 4 hours to complete (one way). The trail includes some remote and rugged terrain, with long climbs, and exposed, narrow sections of track with some challenging grade 3 sections only suitable for confident, experienced cyclists. These include sharp corners, narrow sections along exposed cliff edges, as well as steep ascents and descents. These grade 3 sections are only suitable for experienced ridersThe 25km section between Cornish Point and Clyde Dam is particularly remote with no alternate route or road access. Ensure your biking experience is suitable for this trail by researching trail information fully before committing to trail.Please support the Southern Lakes Trails Trust in their work in building and maintaining local trails.
