Mountain Bike Trails in Signal Hill

Signal Hill is Dunedin's premier mountain bike destination, home to New Zealand's most demanding downhill track featuring rock gardens, jump lines, and steep technical sections. The iconic Big Easy trail winds 6.1km through native bush to the lookout with panoramic city and harbour views, while the extensive network includes diverse terrain for all abilities. Located minutes from the city center with excellent parking, Signal Hill combines technical challenge with spectacular coastal scenery.

Starts off with a couple of rocky corners, before leading into a step-down style jump and a lengthy table-top to finish. Rejoins with 4X track before the bottom of the hill. Track is often used as part of local race events.

4X was created for the 2010 Oceanias. Fast with big roll-overs and berms. Often used as the final stage of DH runs.

Blacks Paper Road Track

Primarily a walking track following an old paper road that links Blacks Rd with Opoho Creek and the Big Easy. Easiest to join on to it from the start of the last bridge going up the Big Easy. It's a hike-a-bike track up and a challenging descent. Horrendous to walk or ride (either direction) when wet.

Starting off at The Plateau you’ll find yourself on a machine groomed flow track with big berms with optional jumps and drops on the side. Meandering across the plateau you will soon boost into the finest native bush. The trail narrows down to smooth single track and gently descends winding through the trees. The occasional steeper corner with catch berm at the end makes this trail at the lower end of grade 4. Leaving the natives the trail crosses OC Track. Follow the windy trail through a section of big pine trees before rollercoastering through a halfpipesk channel and finishing off on the 4X Access Track.

An old Contour Track built across hill from Water Tank Road to the Roller Coaster. Built in 1998 it is now crossed by several other tracks, or been absorbed by the Big Easy.

Fun flowing single track with small features to keep you on your toes. A good next step after you've mastered the Easy Down. Built by Mike and his Sig Digs team in 2015 and given a make over in 2021. Dirt surface, medium sized berms, log-rollers and some drops. Slippery when wet. Previously known as "Plus 1" or "The Mrs".

One step down from Rock Garden, Debacle takes you though Signal Hills rock garden in a more groomed and less direct fashion. There is still challenging rock rollers but also chicken lines around them.

A nice flowing track that is fun to ride fast or not so fast. You can access it from several points on the Emersons Big Easy if you don't want to ride all the way up to the top of the hill. Take care around track crossings. A massive thanks to the trail crew who have worked tirelessly to bring this together. Funding supporters include the Dunedin City Council and Design Windows.

Haggis Basher

Haggis Basher (Grade 4 Intermediate)This is a technical XC track, so named after someone managed to “bash their haggis” while misjudging a rock drop on the track (and an event called the Haggis Basher). This track was used in anger for the 2000 Masters Games, where many of the more roadie focussed riders walked their bikes down the course, to jeers and hoots from spectators. Built in 1998 by Mark, Chris, Trev and others. Named by Chris Arbuckle.

Lower Orange Roughy

Typically drier than other trails on the hill, as it's quite exposed to the sun and wind. Features rocky berms, a couple of jumps, and some rock drops. This section is harder than Orange Roughy above it, steeper with larger exposed rocks.

You were confident enough riding the Mistress and generally like tight and flowy single track thr oughout the native bush? Well there is good news. Maverick Mikes will give you more of everything while stepping up the game a little bit. At the first segment of the track: let go off your brak es and enjoy the g-force with a couple of sweeping bermed corners that lead up to high switchback s with steep exits. You will find yourself flying though a straighter segment and riding the edge of the trail to maintain clearance to your handlebars. The last segment comprises of long back t o back clay berms of various gradient. When wet some of these berms will turn into a mud slide wi th little room to bleed off speed.
