The Paparoa Track is New Zealand's first Great Walk designed for both mountain bikers and walkers, crossing 56.2km of dramatic West Coast terrain over 2 days. This advanced grade 4 trail features long steep climbs, limestone landscapes, old miners' routes, and emerges into lush coastal rainforest between Blackball and Punakaiki. The track includes three DOC huts and the Pike29 Memorial Track, creating a world-class backcountry riding experience through nationally significant parkland.

The 29 men killed in the Pike River mine disaster will be remembered in a number of ways. At the families wishes, the mine site and surrounding area has become part of the Paparoa National Park.This track has been constructed from the former mine site to Te Ara Paparoa Track, dedicated to the men and named the Pike29 Memorial Track in their honour.From the Pike River Mine site, this shared-use track heads up Pike valley through virgin podocarp and red beech forest. The vegetation consists of low alpine scrub and dwarf, weatherbeaten alpine forest.The ridgetop offers views into Pike valley and the Pike River mine vent shaft to the north, and bush-clad valleys to the south. The track then descends towards Te Ara Paparoa track junction. Weather in the Paparoa National Park is changeable. Heavy rain can occur with little warning. Be prepared for rain, heavy fog, snow and high wind.If you are hiking or biking in winter, check snow and ice conditions before you leave and allow extra time. Consider changing your trip to another day if needed.CLIMBING:The track is steep, be prepared for a long climb. If you are starting your hike or bike ride from the Pike29 Memorial Track car park, be prepared for a steep track. You will need a good level of fitness. The track climbs approximately 800 m of elevation to the tops before descending down to Te Ara Paparoa track junction. DESCENDING:When mountain biking be mindful that whilst you may be enjoying a stunning downhill, this is a two-way trail and you could meet walkers or mountain bikers coming the other way.MOUNTAIN BIKING RULES:- E-bikes are not allowed. E-bikes are prohibited under the Paparoa National Park Management Plan.- Riding at night is not allowed, to protect nocturnal species found on the track.

The Paparoa. The first great walk to also allow MTB.Recommended riding direction is from Blackball through to Punakaiki. Trail climbs on an old pack trail to Ces Clark Hut (10KM) at the bush line. This section is a steady Grade 4 (Advanced) climb. From Ces Clark there is another 10km of rolling scenic alpine terrain to Moonlight Hut. All the hard work is done and you are rewarded with spectacular views and rock formations of the beautful Paparoa National Park. This trail is rated Grade 4, however once you get past Ces Clark Hut heading north it is all about Grade 3 (Intermediate)Trail is multi use, please respect other users on the trail. Huts can be booked on the DoC website for overnight stays.
