Best Mountain Bike Trails in Great Barrier Island
Great Barrier Island offers over 100km of well-maintained tracks including the challenging 13km Forest Road from Port Fitzroy to Whangaparapara, an old logging road through Aotea Conservation Park with kauri regeneration and native bush. The island provides remote riding through diverse landscapes from coastal views to native forest, though mountain biking is only permitted on public roads and the Forest Road specifically. Multiple DOC campsites and tramping tracks offer a multi-day adventure experience.

This easy ride does not have extremely steep grades of many of the island's other tracks. It winds through regenerating forest and was once the road linking the island's south and north. From Harataonga campsite, the track heads west across a stream before following a coastline of magnificent views. The track ends at Aotea Road at the south end of Okiwi Basin.
