Best Mountain Bike Trails in Fernhill Trails

Fernhill Trails deliver technical natural descents and flow trails above Queenstown, featuring the famous McNearly Gnarly - one of the best-built jump tracks in Queenstown with 60 rollable jumps over 1.8km. The trail network connects scenic routes like Salmon Run, Pitch Black, and Blugazi, accessible via the Beached As trail or Ben Lomond summit track. All trails are free to ride and maintained by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club through voluntary trail digs held every Wednesday night.

Biking:Uphill access ONLY from the last intersection with Beeched As to the saddle then descend down Missing Link - Upper and/or Missing Link - LowerNo MTB access on the lower sections or down any part of it.Very steep to pedal up but the descents and view are well worth it.Be courteous and give way to walkers.Alot easier on an ebikeHiking:The Ben Lomond Track rewards trampers with spectacular 360 degree views over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges including Ka-kamu-a-Hakitekura/Cecil and Walter Peaks and Kawarau/Remarkables. In fine weather, you may even spot Mounts Pikirakatahi/Earnslaw and Tititea/Aspiring in the distance. The track begins among Douglas fir on Skyline Access Road or the Tiki Trail. At about 800 m altitude you leave the tree line behind to enter alpine tussocks and shrubs. Climb to the 1,326 m Ben Lomond Saddle (Ben Lomond Station) before the track gets steeper and rougher as it approaches Ben Lomond's 1,748m summit.3-4 hr to Ben Lomond Saddle, 6-8 hr to Ben Lomond SummitEnsure you leave enough daylight hours, but pack a headtorch just in case.In winter, you'll need alpine equipment.Note: The section from the saddle to the summit crosses private land. Respect the landowner’s rights and keep to the formed track to avoid stock disturbance and farm hazards.

A classic Queenstown trail chock full of gnarly roots that started life as a DOC (govt) track, was shunted by DOC to the QLDC (local council) who the ignored it for a couple of years and closed it. Now licensed to QMTBC who will upgrade, extend and maintain it. The west (Fernhill) side climb from the Wynyard bike park is a great way to access the McNearlyGnarly jump trail. The East (bike park) side has a great descent that links into Squid Run and there are awesome views from the top if you continue past the treeline where Beech As exits has a fantastic backcounty feel just minutes from the town center.
