The Waimakariri Walkway starts opposite the beach car park on Heyders Road but you can also pick it up opposite the horse trailer car park. The wide trail is well marked, with encouraging kilometre indicators. It travels between Brooklands Lagoon and the beach along the back of the sand dunes and is sandy underfoot much of the way. There are several points where you can access the beach. The end of the track passes through pine forest then finishes on the beach near the mouth of the lagoon. Please take care here because of uneven surfaces and watch for windfalls in the pine forest area. Return the same way or via the beach.
